Hiroshima: When Time Stopped

In a blinding flash
With a devastating crash.
What once was alive
Was then vaporized.
What once was home
Was forever gone
In the city burned to ash.

Those not yet dead
With burned out eyes
With skin hanging,
Uplift their mouths
To the blacken rain
Yearning to quench
The searing pain.

Those left to die
Live haunting within shame.
Those taken along
Through the fire
Through the carnage
Out of this cemetery
Out of this hell.
Victim clutching victim
Together in sorrow
Stagger and stumble
Toward a hopeless tomorrow.

Thus ended the age of war.
When war’s destruction
Became war’s destroyer;
Victory, forever vanquished.
Leaving only sorrow
And compassion unbounded.

Time stopped
At Hiroshima
When war became our enemy.
An age of peace must dawn.
For the power of destruction
Burned all the excuses for war
To ashes;
And made us,
All and each
Committed by compassion,
Responsible for peace.
